Nuclear Risks in Outer Space

Advancing Nuclear Risk Reduction in Space

Challenge

Expanding commercial capabilities and the militarization of space are creating new nuclear escalation risks.

Action

Advance concrete policy and technical solutions with stakeholders to mitigate the risk of nuclear use in outer space.

Results

Implementation of new governance frameworks and risk-reduction tools to prevent nuclear escalation in space.

The rapid growth of commercial space infrastructure and the militarization of outer space are creating new nuclear risks.

Space systems now play a critical role in nuclear deterrence, supporting nuclear command and control, missile warning, and targeting. At the same time, space has become an increasingly contested military domain, making space assets potential flashpoints for miscalculation and nuclear escalation.

As space becomes more complex and contested, the need for effective governance and risk reduction measures is increasingly urgent.

NTI is advancing understanding of the risks at the intersection of space and nuclear security. By convening technical experts, nuclear security practitioners, and industry leaders, NTI is developing practical recommendations to strengthen stability and prevent nuclear escalation in outer space.
