Amano Lauds Iraqi Move on Nuclear Oversight
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano on Sunday lauded Iraq for ratifying last month the Additional Protocol to its nuclear safeguards agreement, United Press International reported.
A total of 119 states have now formally accepted the protocol, which allows the U.N. nuclear watchdog greater access to information and facilities to ensure that national civilian atomic operations are not turned toward weapons purposes.
"Iraq sends a clear message to the region and the world for having brought the Additional Protocol into force. I hope this great achievement will be recognized as a best practice in this region and beyond," Amano said during a trip to Baghdad.
He added: "I exchanged views with Prime Minister [Nouri] al-Maliki and Foreign Minister (Hoshyar) Zebari in a very open and useful way. Iraq's gesture to implement the Additional Protocol sends a positive message to the Middle East region and around the world."
