Armenia to Get U.S. Aid Against WMD Smuggling

A bilateral deal finalized on Tuesday provides for U.S. assistance to efforts by Armenia to curb smuggling of weapons of mass destruction and related materials through its territory, the ARMINFO News Agency reported (see GSN, April 30, 2009).

Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Ashot Hovakimyan and U.S. Ambassador John Heffern inked the agreement on collaboration by Yerevan's National Security Service and the Defense Department.

The deal calls for Armenia to receive U.S. technology that will help in the identification and seizure of unconventional arms. The two sides would also share data, and the Pentagon is to provide training to Armenian personnel, according to the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

Armenian citizens have been reported caught trying to sell sensitive materials on multiple occasions in recent years. Two nationals were reported last month to have been taken into custody for trying to deal radioactive strontium 90 (see GSN, April 16; ARMINFO News Agency, May 22).
