China Rejects Claim on Trying Missile for Destroying Orbital Craft

China last week rejected press accounts indicating it intends to conduct a November trial launch of a missile intended for shooting down satellites, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun on Thursday said "such reports did not conform to the fact."

The purported exercise was to focus on orbiters circling particularly far above the Earth; such craft were said to include spy and guidance instruments. The launch was reportedly scheduled to take place after the U.S. elections in November.

China eliminated one of its orbiting satellites in January 2007. The United States carried out a similar operation the following year.
