EU Opens Biodefense Program to Protect Troops
The defense ministers from five European Union countries yesterday inaugurated a new program to improve protections against biological threats, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, April 20).
Called "Bio-Edep," the $135 million program is intended to protect military personnel by developing technology that could detect harmful disease agents.
This should ameliorate "an important shortfall in the CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) defense area," the European Defense Agency said in a statement.
The program now encompasses the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. However, "other (EU) member states have expressed their intention to join," according to the statement (Agence France-Presse/Spacewar.com, May 18).
