French President Cites Mideast Nuclear Danger
The spread of nuclear weapons is a top threat to Middle East, French President Francois Hollande said on Friday.
He warned Iran against seeking nuclear arms, the Kuwait News Agency reported. Paris and other Western capitals suspect Tehran of pursuing a nuclear-weapon capability; Iranian leaders say their atomic programs are strictly civilian in nature.
"Iran has perfectly the right to obtain civil nuclear capabilities, but it would be unacceptable that it comes to have a nuclear weapon," Hollande said in a New Year's message to senior French diplomatic envoys. "I call, once again, (on Iran) to get into conformity with its international obligations."
North Korea must do the same, and Tehran and Pyongyang also have to conduct "a full, complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of their (military) nuclear and ballistic programs," Hollande added.
