India Prepares For Nuke-Ready Agni 2 Test Launch
Indian military scientists are preparing to conduct another combat-readiness assessment of the nuclear-capable Agni 2 ballistic missile, the New Indian Express reported on Thursday (see GSN, July 13).
The Agni 2, which has a reach of just over 1,240 miles, is slated to be launched from the Wheeler Island missile site between Aug. 10 and 12, according to informed insiders.
Indian Defense Research and Development Organization specialists will use the coming user trial launch to assess the missile's domestically developed flight path technology. During previous trials, the Agni 2 is understood to have not flown the entirety of its intended flight path.
"Newer technologies have been incorporated in the missile and the weapon system has also been provided with greater thrust," a defense scientist said. "Let's hope for the better result this time" (Hemant Kumar Rout, New Indian Express, Aug. 2).
