The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today released new interim recommendations for airborne exposure limits to sulfur mustard agents, according to a notice published in the Federal Register (see GSN, April 23).

The new recommendations include an exposure limit of .00002 mg/m of sulfur mustard agent in a 12-hour period for the general population and a limit of .0004 mg/m of agent to workers involved in the handling and destruction of the material. The recommendations have been issued as interim criteria pending the improved determination of the carcinogenic potential of sulfur mustard agent and are set to go into effect July 1 to allow the U.S. Defense Department to make the necessary program adjustments (Federal Register, May 3).
