Japan Could Quickly Deploy Patriot Missile Defenses, Military Official Says
Japan today said it could deploy its Patriot missile defenses within hours if North Korea appeared to be preparing for a long-range ballistic missile launch, the Xinhua News Service reported (see GSN, June 3).
From the moment a deployment order is issued, Japan would only need three hours to ready its Patriot Advanced Capability 3 interceptors to destroy possible North Korean rocket fragments, said Kenichiro Hokazono, chief of staff for Japan's Air Self-Defense Force.
Pyongyang has suggested it might test-fire a long-range missile soon, and Japan must be prepared to react, Hokazono said (see GSN, June 1).
North Korea's most recent long-range launch sent a rocket soaring directly over Japan (Xinhua News Agency, June 5).
