Mexico to Join Global Nuclear Counterterrorism Group, Russia Says

Mexico has joined an international effort to prevent terrorists from acquiring and using nuclear weapons, Russian Foreign Ministry sources told ITAR-Tass today (see GSN, June 16, 2009).

"Mexico has official notified Russia and the USA. as co-chairmen of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism on approving the statement on its principles," sources said. "We welcome this decision and we expect that Mexico will make a substantial contribution to its implementation."

The partnership was established in 2006 and now involves more than 70 nations. It seeks to track down, safeguard and dispose of possible radiological and nuclear weapons materials.

"We expect that other states, which share its common goals and are actively committed to fight against nuclear terrorism, will also join the Global Initiative," ministry sources said (ITAR-Tass, March 5).
