New Zealand to Support U.S. Nuclear Security Efforts in Uzbekistan

New Zealand has agreed to supply $400,000 to U.S. efforts to protect and extract high-risk nuclear substances from Uzbekistan, according to a Friday release from the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (see GSN, May 30).

The funding represents Wellington's initial financial offering to the NNSA Global Threat Reduction Initiative, which aims to safeguard and reduce exposed radiological and nuclear materials held at nonmilitary facilities around the world.

The South Pacific island state in the past has supplied monetary assistance to five separate NNSA nonproliferation initiatives such as programs to curb atomic trafficking in Ukraine and Kazakhstan. So far, New Zealand has given in excess of $2 million to global nonproliferation activities operated by the semiautonomous Energy Department agency.

The National Nuclear Security Administration has received roughly $71 million for its anti-nuclear proliferation efforts from Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea and the United Kingdom (U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration release, July 27).
