Official Nominated for Top State Department Arms Control Post

Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller has been nominated to officially assume the post of undersecretary of State for arms control and international security, the White House said on Monday.

Gottemoeller has held the job on an acting basis since Ellen Tauscher stepped down in February.

Gottemoeller is a veteran nonproliferation specialist whose previous posts have included head of the Energy Department's Nonproliferation and National Security Office from 1997 to 1999 and National Security Council director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Affairs from 1994 to 1997. She was the administration's lead negotiator for the U.S.-Russian New START nuclear arms control treaty.
