Pakistan Conducts Trial Launch of Nuke-Ready Ballistic Missile

Pakistan on Monday declared that it had conducted a successful trial launch of a limited-range nuclear-capable missile, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, Nov. 10, 2011).

The Hatf 2 ballistic missile "provides an operational level capacity to Pakistan's strategic forces, additional to the strategic and tactical level capacity which Pakistan already possesses," the Pakistani armed forces said in provided remarks.

The weapon can travel up to 113 miles and be fitted with nuclear or conventional warheads that have the ability to strike their targets with "high accuracy," according to the statement.

The longest-range ballistic missile in Pakistan's stockpile, the Hatf 5, is understood to have a top range of 2,175 miles (Agence France-Presse/Google News, March 5).
