Radioactive Source Stolen in Spain
An industrial radioactive source was reported taken during the burglary on Sunday at a construction firm in Madrid, Spain, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, Feb. 14).
The nation's Nuclear Safety Council warned that people could be endangered if the measuring device is opened.
There are concerns that materials used in medicine or industry could be diverted to produce a radiological "dirty bomb," which would employ conventional explosives to disperse a radioactive substance. The material stolen in Madrid was identified as not being highly radioactive (Associated Press/Boston Globe, June 6).
