State Court Orders Isolation for Tuberculosis Patient
An Illinois court on Wednesday ordered a tuberculosis-infected man to stay in isolation for 30 days and submit to Global Positioning System tracking after he neglected measures to prevent others from catching the disease, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, April 1, 2008).
Exposure to Clasance Botembe, 20, caused his girlfriend to contract tuberculosis, court records indicate. Botembe failed to adhere to measures that would have prevented the illness from spreading, prosecutors and health officials said.
Champaign County Circuit Judge John Kennedy demanded that Botembe isolate himself at his residence where he is being treated. The tuberculosis patient could face a Class A misdemeanor charge and possible jail time if he breaches the order.
Kennedy, Botembe and others at the court hearing wore protective masks (Associated Press/Yahoo!News, Jan. 22).
