U.S. Tests Patriot Missiles

U.S. Patriot missiles brought down two guided missile targets in recent testing, United Press International reported yesterday (see GSN, May 25).

Two Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missiles, carrying new guidance software, were ripple-fired against a tactical ballistic missile as a third Patriot missile intercepted another rocket at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

This was the first of four test flights planned Patriots using Raytheon’s post-deployment build-6 (PDB-6) software. The targets were older Patriot missiles.

The test “demonstrated the … system’s capability to search, detect, track, classify, engage and kill two surrogate full-body tactical ballistic missile targets,” said Raytheon Vice President Rick Yuse in a press release.

A U.S. Army Patriot unit from Fort Bliss, Texas, conducted the launch (Hil Anderson/United Press International, June 5).
