Nuclear Security Efforts Receive Australian Honors
NTI counselor John Carlson and NTI partner Gareth Evans received awards as a part of Australia's 2012 Queen’s birthday honours. Both men were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the field of nuclear non-proliferation and threat reduction.
John Carlson was named a member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to public administration, particularly in the areas of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, and the development of international safeguards policy. Recently, Carlson contributed to NTI's Nuclear Materials Security Index as a member of the International Panel of Experts. He also works on projects related to the nuclear fuel cycle and verification in his role as counselor to NTI. Gareth Evans was appointed a companion of the Order of Australia (AC), the country's highest award. The award recognizes his service to international relations and his continuing role as an adviser to governments on matters including disarmament and conflict prevention and resolution. Evans is the convenor of the Asia Pacific Leadership Network, a partner organization to NTI's Nuclear Security Project. Last October, NTI presented Evans with the Amartya Sen Award for his leadership in creating international momentum for the vision of a world without nuclear weapons.
Congratulations to both John Carlson and Gareth Evans on these much-deserved awards. NTI is grateful for their invaluable work to reduce nuclear threats.
