Bio

Shayna Korol was a program associate for NTI’s Global Biological Policy and Programs (NTI | bio). In this role, she supported work on addressing global catastrophic biological risks, bioweapon disincentivization efforts, advocacy activities, and the NextGen for Biosecurity Competition.

Prior to serving as a program associate, Korol was the inaugural Biosecurity Policy Fellow at NTI, sponsored by the Open Philanthropy Technology Policy Fellowship. In this capacity, she co-authored several articles on risk reduction and the Joint Assessment Mechanism.

She has been involved in health policy research throughout her career, and works to communicate the risk of global catastrophic biological risks to a variety of stakeholders. Korol holds a B.A. from Brandeis University in Health Science, Society, and Policy.

Identifying Outbreak Origins: How the Joint Assessment Mechanism Can Improve Pandemic Response

NTI is working with international partners to develop a new Joint Assessment Mechanism (JAM) within the office of the UN Secretary-General to rapidly identify outbreak origins. Without the ability to quickly determine the origin of an outbreak, researchers are hampered in their ability to rapidly develop vaccines and other medical countermeasures that can slow the pace of the outbreak, ultimately saving countless lives.
