Nunn, Lugar, Browne to Release New Report

Despite high-level attention paid to global nuclear materials security through head-of-state Nuclear Security Summits, a critical gap remains: 83% of the world’s weapons-usable nuclear materials—plutonium and highly enriched uranium—is categorized as "military" and therefore falls outside the scope of international nuclear security guidelines.

To address this gap, NTI convened a study group of prominent military, political, and technical leaders from key nuclear-armed states to develop recommendations for securing military materials and providing international confidence in their security. The study group was co-chaired by Sam Nunn, Richard Lugar, and Des Browne, and its recommendations were informed by more than two decades of experience with the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program.
