Sam Nunn
Co-Founder and Co-Chair, NTI
"From the beginning of NTI, securing nuclear materials and preventing catastrophic terrorism has been our major focus," said NTI Co-Chairman Sam Nunn, opening an event this morning at the Newseum co-hosted by National Journal and NTI on prospects for the upcoming 2014 Nuclear Security Summit.
Nunn kicked off the event, which featured a keynote address by the U.S. "Sherpa" to the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit, the White House's Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall and a panel discussion with experts and officials, moderated by National Journal contributing editor James Kitfield.
"Today, we do not have an effective global security system, based on common international standards, to protect dangerous nuclear materials," he said. "I believe that our leaders must use the Hague Summit to seriously discuss and reach agreement on key principles for an effective and sustainable system."
A video of the webcast and a transcript from the event are forthcoming.
