The Nuclear Threat Initiative’s 2024 Impact Report, What Does It Take to Build a Safer World?, is now available, detailing the organization’s accomplishments in reducing global nuclear and biological threats and addressing the benefits and risks associated with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

The report highlights NTI’s impact on ensuring the global expansion of nuclear energy is done safely and securely; disincentivizing the development of bioweapons; preventing a return to explosive nuclear weapons testing in Nevada; supporting next-generation experts in international security; building awareness and public engagement about the risks posed by nuclear weapons; and more.

A sample of NTI’s impact on global threat reduction tells the story of 2024:

  • A unique collaboration between NTI, Clean Air Task Force, and the EFI Foundation—the Nuclear Scaling Initiative—that is working across the nuclear energy ecosystem to enable the rapid expansion of safe and secure nuclear energy that does not lead to more weapons.
  • A free, internationally available software tool to screen DNA synthesis orders and flag potentially risky genetic sequences as part of establishing a global norm for responsible bioscience.
  • A new program, FutureSafe: AI and Emerging Technology, to work across governments, industry, academia, and NGOs to define the implications of AI for nuclear weapons modernization; catalyze the development of AI-enabled nuclear security technologies; and promote urgent actions to safeguard AI-bio capabilities.
  • An award-winning, multi-faceted, Hollywood-based campaign to harness the Oscars buzz around Oppenheimer and build public awareness and engagement about today’s nuclear threats.

As NTI Co-Chairs Ernest Moniz, Sam Nunn, and Ted Turner wrote in a letter to readers, reflecting on events from wars in regions of the world with nuclear weapons to advances in artificial intelligence to the emergence of a new avian flu: “Against that backdrop, NTI remains laser-focused on developing innovative, durable solutions to address rapidly evolving and persistent nuclear and biological threats. As our record reflects, NTI in 2024 demonstrated that we know how to answer a fundamental question: What does it take to build a safer world?”
