Vice President, Government Relations

Alex Tiersky is vice president for Government Relations. In this role, he oversees NTI’s legislative and executive branch strategy and advocacy efforts, shaping and driving the organization’s policy agenda in the U.S. government.

Prior to joining NTI, Tiersky served in senior executive branch appointments, including on the National Security Council staff, where he served as director for Western Europe, and at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), as senior advisor for Ukraine Recovery.

Tiersky previously served in senior Congressional staff roles on foreign affairs and national security for more than a decade.  From 2016 to 2023, he was a senior policy advisor at the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission), empowering efforts by bipartisan coalitions of senators and House members to counter Russian aggression, bolster alliances, and foster comprehensive security based on human rights principles. As a specialist in Foreign Affairs with the U.S. Congressional Research Service (2012-2016), Tiersky provided expert advice to members of Congress and staff on national security and foreign policy legislation, policy, and oversight activities.

Tiersky’s prior roles include having served as director of the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Brussels, and in various roles at the U.S. Department of State, including at the U.S. Mission to the OSCE, the U.S. Mission to NATO, and in the Arms Control and European Affairs Bureaus. He holds degrees from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins; the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po Paris); and Tufts University.
