World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS)

Former Senator Sam Nunn stated the imperative for the collaboration plainly: “Vulnerable nuclear material anywhere is a threat to everyone, everywhere.”

WINS brings together practitioners—nuclear security experts, nuclear industry leaders, governments, and international organizations—to provide an international forum for those accountable for nuclear security to share and promote the best security practices available to safeguard vulnerable materials.

Twenty-four countries have weapons-usable nuclear materials, and they are held with varying levels of security, but it is crucial that all nuclear materials are safe from attack, theft, or sabotage.  WINS’ focus is on the physical protection and security of radioactive materials and facilities worldwide and the rapid and sustainable improvement of security.

The WINS headquarters is located in Vienna to ensure a close working relationship with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The WINS mission has been endorsed by international organizations and multinational gatherings and is supported by governments around the world.
