NTI at the Biological Weapons Convention: Urging Collective Action to Reduce Biological and AI Risks

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) will join world leaders and policy makers at the Sixth Session of the Working Group on the Strengthening of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC). During the session, NTI’s Global Biological Policy and Programs team will host two side events. These events will highlight NTI-led initiatives focused on reducing biological and emerging technology threats that imperil humanity.

Reducing Risks at the Convergence of AI and the Life Sciences

NTI | bio will host a side event focused on actions BWC States Parties, private industry, and civil society can take to reduce AIxBio risks.

The event will highlight the AIxBio Global Forum as a platform for international experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to identify and reduce biosecurity risks at the intersection of AI and the life sciences. Panelists will discuss the Forum’s recent Statement on Biosecurity Risks at the Convergence of AI and the Life Sciences, a call on governments, industry, the scientific community, and funders to take action to protect against misuse.

Enhancing Transparency for Bioscience Research and Development: Report Launch

NTI | bio will launch Enhancing Transparency for Bioscience Research and Development, a new report outlining practical recommendations to strengthen the global norm against biological weapons development and use. This event will explore key measures to enhance transparency and offer concrete recommendations for building confidence in compliance with the BWC. Discussions will include scientific and technical methods for data collection and analysis, procedures to facilitate information gathering and building trust, and the institutional structures needed to sustain transparency efforts. Panelists will also examine how these approaches can help strengthen compliance, reinforce international commitments, and inspire innovative approaches to reducing the risks posed by biological weapons.
