WANO and WINS Plan Groundbreaking Collaboration on Nuclear Safety and Security

The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) will undertake a collaborative effort to examine the interface between nuclear safety and nuclear security. A joint Working Group will be established in 2012 to identify best practices for managing the intersection of these disciplines.

In a joint press release, NTI president emeritus and chairman of WINS, Charles B Curtis, said “We welcome the opportunity to work with WANO and to draw on its enormous experience of achieving high standards of operational safety. There are strong parallels in the effective management of nuclear safety and security and strong arguments for ensuring that both are given the right level of attention through design, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning. We need to be confident that nuclear safety and the associated emergency planning arrangements are resilient whether the incident is initiated by an accident or malicious action.”

Launched by NTI in 2008 as a first-of-its-kind organization, the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) has brought together more than 800 members from more than 60 countries to share best practices for nuclear security in an effort to prevent nuclear terrorism.
