NTI Hosts Regional Workshops on Priorities for the 2020 NPT Review Conference and Beyond
To address the challenges facing the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) regime and support a successful 2020 NPT Review Conference, NTI hosted regional workshops in Latin America, Africa, and the Asia Pacific to discuss regional non-proliferation and disarmament concerns and priorities; highlight potential opportunities for governments to contribute to strengthening the NPT and the Review process; and develop and build support for practical steps, new initiatives, and tangible commitments (including those developed under NTI’s Global Enterprise project) that demonstrate the ability of NPT States Parties to work together to advance the treaty’s goals. The workshops, held from 2019-2022, were designed to ensure that a broad range of perspectives are represented in building a shared foundation for progress.
Workshop 1: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (December 2019)
On December 3-4, 2019, NTI, in partnership with NPSGlobal, convened a workshop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to discuss practical risk-reduction steps to build a pathway to disarmament; options to strengthen transparency among the nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states; measures to manage fissile material; and how peaceful uses of nuclear energy can support sustainable development goals. Approximately 20 government officials and non-governmental experts from the region took part in the discussion.

Workshop 2: Accra, Ghana (March 2020)
On March 4-5, NTI, in partnership with the African Center for Science and International Security (AFRICSIS), convened a workshop in Accra, Ghana to discuss priority issues to strengthen the core goals of the NPT: disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Participants discussed specific issues related to Africa, including recommendations for how African states can strengthen their role in the next NPT Review Conference, the future of peaceful nuclear development in Africa, strengthening the role of the Treaty of Pelindaba, and concerns about growing and existing nuclear security threats. Approximately 30 government officials and non-governmental experts from 16 countries across Africa took part in the discussion. Dr. Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, provided opening remarks.

Workshop 3: Jakarta, Indonesia (June 2022)
On June 29-30, 2022, NTI, in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN), convened a workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia to discuss priority issues for strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in advance of the tenth NPT Review Conference (RevCon). The meeting brought together 32 participants from 15 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, including senior officials, next-generation professionals, and experts from governments, regional organizations, and think tanks.
