North Korea on Friday claimed it had successfully tested a new precision tactical missile that could be used against South Korea.

The official announcement of a successful test-firing of "a newly developed tactical guided missile" came one day after the North was detected launching three short-range projectiles into waters off its eastern coast, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un was said to have personally directed the missile test-launch. "The test-firing clearly proved that the tactical guided weapons didn't have an inch of deviation in their scientific and technological performance," state-controlled media reported.

"The test-launch helped the Korean People's Army get the master key to putting all strike means including short-, medium- and long-range guided weapons on ultra-precision basis of the world level and opened a prospect for maximizing their striking accuracy and power," the Korean Central News Agency said.

An unidentified South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff officer said Pyongyang appeared with each successive test to be extending the range of its 300-millimeter multiple-rocket launcher, which the Yonhap article says is termed the "KN-09." The projectiles launched on Thursday traveled roughly 118 miles, the officer said.

Recent open-source research has indicated that a cruise missile with the shorthand designation KN-09 is likely a copy of the Russian Kh-35 antiship cruise missile.
