Russia Claims S-500 Will Outmatch Equivalent U.S. Systems

The Russian military believes its developmental S-500 antimissile system once finished will outmatch U.S. equivalents, Interfax reported on Wednesday.

"Our newest S-500 system with a new missile is better than any other U.S. analog. While Americans are still seeking publicity in electronic mass media, we already have an actual missile," Russian aerospace defense forces head Col. Gen. Oleg Ostapenko claimed in an interview.

The S-500 surface-to-air missile will play a key role in the country's air and missile defense strategy in the 2020s, the officer said.

Ostapenko said work on the S-500 was on schedule though he refused to disclose specifics about the system's technical parameters.

"Our work on the missile is going to plan, there are some great ideas but not without elements of superstition," he said. "We do not normally talk about it before it  (the missile) flies."
