Spending Bill Includes $700 Million for Pandemic Preparedness

The $410 billion omnibus spending bill signed into law this week by U.S. President Barack Obama includes more than $700 million in pandemic funding at the U.S. Health and Human Services Department, the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy reported (see GSN, Dec. 5, 2008).

The bill also allocates $467 million for vaccine production operations and $40 million for medical countermeasures for personnel from the agency and its contractors, said Richard Hamburg of the nonprofit Trust for America’s Health.

The bill funds government operations through the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30 (Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy release, March 12).
