Turkey Studying Possible New Missile Pursuits

Turkey is examining its options for expanding its ballistic missile capabilities in order to better defend the country against developing threats, United Press International reported on Tuesday (see GSN, Feb. 1).

Ankara is presently understood to possess 120 U.S-supplied tactical ballistic missiles that can travel close to 100 miles. A nationally produced high-altitude weapon is intended to have a slightly lesser range.

"There are ongoing meetings on what can be done regarding ballistic missiles," an anonymous Turkish Defense Ministry official said in an interview with Today's Zaman. "The establishment of satellite launch vehicles will provide the capability of sending missiles outside the atmosphere," he said.

Satellite launch vehicles employ technology that can also be used in ICBM development (United Press International, July 24).

The Turkish television network NTV asserted that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and military General Staff head Gen. Necdet Özel last month authorized initiation of an effort to field satellite launch vehicles, according to a news summary by the Hurriyet Daily News (Hurriyet Daily News, July 24).
