U.S. Supplies Jordan With Radiation Sensor Trucks

The U.S. Energy Department has donated four trucks equipped with radiation detectors to Jordan in accordance with efforts to curb the potential smuggling of nuclear and radiological materials, the Jordan News Agency reported on Wednesday (see GSN, March 23).

Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Jamal Sharaf said the vehicles would improve the government's capacity to keep tabs on sensitive substances in the country. The vehicles come with radioactive and ionization monitors and will be employed in Amman and at the Queen Alia International Airport and the Amman Customs Department.

A 2008 bilateral agreement calls for Jordan to receive U.S. radiation monitoring technology that would be deployed at border checkpoints, seaports and airports. Washington also agreed to supply upkeep services for the equipment and to prepare local personnel to operate the technology (Jordan News Agency , Oct. 5).
