NTI and U.S. State Department host UN First Committee side event on IPNDV joint initiative

On
Wednesday, October 5, the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the U.S. Department of
State are hosting a side event at the United Nations First Committee in New York on the International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament
Verification (IPNDV). The IPNDV is a public-private partnership between
the U.S. Department of State and NTI, and is a major, multi-year effort to
further the understanding of the complex technical challenges involved in
nuclear verification. The International Partnership is a multinational
effort designed to build capacity among states both with and without nuclear
weapons, and develop technical solutions for monitoring and verification
challenges across the nuclear weapons lifecycle. 

The speakers for the event
include: Frank Rose, Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control,
Verification, and Compliance of the U.S. Department of State; Andrew
Bieniawski, Vice President for Material Security and Minimization at NTI; Henk
Cor van der Kwast, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the
Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and Disarmament Ambassador at large; Ian McConville, Deputy Permanent Representative of the
Australian Delegation to the Conference on Disarmament; Eva Walder, Sweden’s
Ambassador for Disarmament; and Toshiro Sano, Ambassador and Permanent
Representative of Japan to the Conference on Disarmament.

Discussion will focus on the contributions
of the IPNDV and the progress made since its launch in March 2015. In
particular, speakers will share insights gained from the three Plenary sessions
held by the Partnership so far, discuss the work of the IPNDV’s three Working
Groups, and talk about the
establishment of the Monitoring
and Verification Resource Collection which is a bibliography of studies and
reports on key aspects of disarmament verification available on NTI’s website.
