Riaz Mohammad Khan and Liru Cui Join NTI’s Board of Directors; Christopher Carr Elected Treasurer and CFO

WASHINGTON – Today, NTI Co-Chairmen Sam Nunn and Ted Turner announced two new additions to NTI’s international board of directors: Ambassador Riaz Mohammad Khan, former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, and Professor Liru Cui, former President of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), a research institution for international studies based in Beijing.

“NTI is delighted to have these two valuable perspectives on our Board,” said Nunn. “As a career diplomat and an expert on Pakistan’s foreign policy, Ambassador Khan has experience working on the front lines of Pakistan-Indian diplomacy.  His background will be invaluable to NTI and our Board.”

“These two global leaders will help bolster and inform NTI’s international work to reduce nuclear threats and build a safer world,” said Turner. “Professor Liru Cui’s considerable experience and credibility will help NTI expand its engagement with China, a critical player on global security issues.”

NTI also named Christopher F. Carr, CPA as its treasurer and chief financial officer.  Prior to joining NTI, Carr was the chief operating officer of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Vital Voices Global Partnership.  “Chris knows firsthand what it means to undertake mission-focused work, and we’re thrilled to have him on board,” said Joan Rohlfing, NTI president.

Riaz Mohammad Khan is a former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan and served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, its Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg & the European Union, as well as Pakistan’s first Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.  As Foreign Secretary, he served as head of the Pakistani delegation to the Pakistan-India Composite Dialogue and the Pakistan-U.S. Strategic Dialogue.  He also led Pakistan’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in 2007.  Following his retirement from Pakistan’s Foreign Service in 2008, Khan spent a year as a scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington DC, where he authored his book "Afghanistan and Pakistan: Conflict, Extremism and Resistance to Modernity."  He also served as Pakistan's envoy for "back channel" diplomacy with India from 2009 to 2012.

Liru Cui, Former President, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR)
Liru Cui is the former President of CICIR, where he serves as a Senior Adviser and supervises the Doctoral Program of Study.  His areas of expertise include U.S. foreign policy, U.S.-China relations, international security issues and Chinese foreign policy.  Cui is a member of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the Chinese Peoples’ Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a member of the Foreign Policy Consulting Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  He is Vice President of China National Association for International Studies (CNAIS) and serves as Senior Adviser to multiple institutions for the study of national security and foreign relations.  Earlier in his career, Cui served as First Secretary and Counselor at the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations.

Christopher F. Carr, CPA, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer
Christopher F. Carr, CPA joined NTI in July 2013. He has more than 28 years of experience working in nonprofit organizations.  Prior to joining NTI, Carr was the chief operating officer of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Vital Voices Global Partnership.  He was also vice president of finance and development at Defenders of Wildlife and spent the early part of his career in public accounting.  He is a licensed CPA in Maryland and holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Maryland.
