Intern, Global Biological Policy and Programs

Amelia Crabtree was the Spring 2022 Intern for NTI’s Global Biological Policy and Programs team (NTI | bio). In this role, she supported NTI | bio’s projects to strengthen global health security.

Crabtree is a graduate student in the Biohazardous Threat Agents program at Georgetown University. After graduating from American University with a degree in public health, she worked at the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator, supporting PEPFAR programs in the Western Hemisphere. Amelia also worked on the federal COVID-19 response, developing daily and weekly data reports, which is where she started to develop an interest in biosecurity and biodefense. In her spare time, Amelia enjoys refereeing high school lacrosse, attempting to cook, and working on 3-D puzzles.

Today, leaders preparing for the BWC’s Ninth Review Conference in August are exploring whether the global community can leverage increased attention and political will to strengthen the BWC by building mechanisms that increase transparency and trust with the goal of reducing the risk of global catastrophic biological events. A particular aim is determining whether there are effective and politically viable ways to enforce the treaty.
