Director, Global Nuclear Policy Program
Nuclear proliferation risks are rising amid intensified geopolitical competition and rapid technological advancement, placing increased pressure on NWFZs.
Convene regional experts and policymakers, assess emerging nuclear risks, and develop practical recommendations to strengthen NWFZs.
Resilient, more connected zones that contribute to nuclear risk reduction, nonproliferation, and disarmament.
NWFZs are among the most successful regional nonproliferation mechanisms. Spanning Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific, these legally binding treaties have helped prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, reinforced global nonproliferation norms, and demonstrated that entire regions can maintain their security without relying on nuclear weapons. However, their success cannot be taken for granted. Geopolitical tensions, technological advancements, and the threat of nuclear proliferation are placing new strains on NWFZs.
NTI convenes regional experts, government officials, and civil society leaders to strengthen NWFZs as they confront 21st century challenges.
Through consultations and workshops across all NWFZs, NTI identifies emerging risks, develops practical recommendations, and supports zones in playing a leadership role in reducing nuclear dangers.
At a time when the NPT is under growing strain, NWFZs stand out as one of areas where cooperation has not only endured but delivered tangible results. They demonstrate that large regions can sustain security without nuclear weapons, and that states are willing to translate commitments into practice.
Nuclear-weapon-free zones (NWFZs) are one of the most successful and enduring elements of the global effort to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. Practical steps exist that could strengthen NWFZ resilience, reinvigorate engagement within and between them, and create opportunities for leadership.
