The amended Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) is the only legally binding treaty that requires countries to protect nuclear materials and nuclear facilities. It is therefore a central tool for preventing nuclear terrorism and preserving the benefits to peaceful nuclear use.
In 2021, the International Atomic Energy Agency will convene the first review conference for the amended CPPNM, and states parties will be able to review implementation of the treaty for the first time. The review will be an opportunity to help build a strong, effective, and sustainable treaty regime that can become a living, breathing tool for nuclear security dialogue and progress.
Next year’s review conference will be preceded by a Preparatory Committee meeting in December, where countries will decide on the agenda and rules of procedure for the review conference. It is important for government representatives to be fully prepared for those discussions.
