As the essential raw materials for a nuclear bomb, highly enriched uranium, and plutonium are two of the deadliest materials in the world. For eight years, the NTI Nuclear Security Index has assessed the security of those materials against theft and for four years, the security of nuclear facilities against an act of sabotage.

With the 2020 Nuclear Security Index, NTI further opens the aperture to address the risk that a terrorist organization or other non-state actor will acquire a radioactive source to use in a dirty bomb. This year’s report includes a new Radioactive Source Security Assessment, looking at national policies, commitments, and actions to protect against this threat.
