Los Alamos Halts Some Plutonium Activities Amid Safety Audit

The Los Alamos National Laboratory is freezing some activities at its principal plutonium site while a safety review is under way, the Associated Press reported on Monday.

The halt in plutonium work follows the findings of an Energy Department  inspector general's June report that questioned the safety of some processes undertaken at Los Alamos' outdated facilities.

Los Alamos officials said they anticipate some sections of the plutonium laboratory coming back online quicker than other areas and that it is unlikely there will be any notable effect on the facility's work.
