New NTI Tutorial Tackles the U.S. Nuclear Budget

New India and Pakistan Facility Videos Available Online as Part of Updated South Asian Collection
The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), in
partnership with NTI, has created two
new educational videos of enrichment sites in South Asia: India’s
Rattehalli Materials Plant and Pakistan’s Khan Research Laboratory.
These videos come at a time when the threat of nuclear conflict
in the region is elevated. India’s No First Use policy made headlines last week,
and both India and Pakistan have recently expanded sites related to uranium
enrichment and continue to develop and test their ballistic missiles. In
January, Pakistan successfully tested a nuclear-capable cruise missile from a
submarine for the first time, the Babur-3, along with a new Medium Range
Ballistic Missile (MRBM), the Ababeel. In March, India successfully tested its
new supersonic cruise missile, the BrahMos, a joint Indian-Russian development
project, after successfully testing its Agni-V ICBM in December 2016.
These educational videos are released simultaneously with B-roll
footage of both facilities, along with B-roll footage of Pakistan’s missile
fleet for use on broadcast media:

Rattehalli
Materials Plant
Satellite imagery has revealed that
a major addition is being added to the Rattehalli Materials Plant in Mysore,
India. Analysts believe this addition to be a new enrichment hall, which will significantly
increase the site’s enrichment capability.

Khan
Research Laboratories
Heavy construction activity has been
spotted at the Khan Research Laboratory (KRL) in Kahuta, Pakistan. Founded in
1976, KRL is Pakistan’s primary enriched uranium production facility. New construction activity might indicate the
addition of a new uranium enrichment complex.

Pakistan Missile B-Roll
Pakistan’s missile program is rapidly evolving,
achieving greater accuracy, payload capacity, and range. This progress can be
seen in this year’s test of a submarine-launched cruise missile and the
addition of a new MRBM with a greater payload capacity.
