New NTI Video Calls for Protecting U.S. Commitment to Global Health Security
A new video from NTI makes the case for protecting America’s commitment to global health security.
The United States has been a leader in
global health security and its investments have protected national and
international peace, security, and biodefense. Unfortunately, the United States is now
faced with a major funding cliff for CDC and USAID global health security
programming—critical supplemental funding that was allocated in response to the
devastating 2014 Ebola crisis runs out at the end of Fiscal Year 2019.
With sustained funding for global health security, we can secure crucial elements of U.S. biodefense: $208.2 million a year at the CDC and $172.5
million a year at USAID. This funding is critical
for public health and boosts the U.S. economy. Without it, the CDC has
planned to downsize epidemic prevention activities in 39 out of 49 countries—effectively
placing up to 80% of our global security efforts abroad at risk.
NTI Vice President for Global Biological
Policy and Programs Beth Cameron warns, “The next global infectious disease epidemic will
cost untold lives, harm the U.S. export economy, and threaten U.S. jobs and
peace and security —even if the disease never reaches our shores. A reduction in these U.S. investments also risks our ability
to leverage private sector resources and donors from other countries that have
begun their own investments, building on the scaffolding that U.S. leadership
has created.”
