NTI Hosts 8th Meeting of Cyber-Nuclear Forum

Nearly 40 cybersecurity experts from nuclear facilities in more than 14 countries discussed practical steps for strengthening cybersecurity at nuclear facilities during the eighth meeting of NTI’s Cyber-Nuclear Forum in January 2024.

Nuclear facilities are increasingly digital, which brings many benefits but also introduces risks. If a facility’s networks were compromised, it could lead to the loss of sensitive business and security information; if a facility’s control systems were compromised, it could directly undermine the safety and security of the facility.

The Cyber-Nuclear Forum brings together cybersecurity experts from nuclear facilities around the world, enabling the exchange information and best practices around cybersecurity. It is the only forum of its kind, solely focused on identifying practical measures to prevent a cybersecurity lapse that could jeopardize not only the facility’s safety, but also global confidence in civilian nuclear power as a safe and reliable energy source.

During the January 16 meeting, participants focused on how artificial intelligence might be used at nuclear facilities and how to capture the benefits while reducing any risks. In addition, participants discussed security monitoring in industrial control systems.

Generous financial support from a number of nuclear operators has enabled the growth and sustainment of the Cyber-Nuclear Forum. “We are pleased by the ongoing engagement of nuclear operators and believe the Forum is making a unique contribution to nuclear security and safety” said Page Stoutland, a consultant to NTI who formerly served as vice president of NTI’s Scientific and Technical Affairs program.

The Forum is expected to meet in person in the summer of 2024 near Toronto, Canada.
