NTI Welcomes Alex Tiersky as Vice President of Government Relations

Experts Also Join Development and Communications Teams

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Alex Tiersky, who has served in senior Congressional and White House staff roles on foreign affairs and national security issues for more than a decade, as Vice President, Government Relations. In this new NTI role, he will oversee NTI’s legislative and executive branch strategy and advocacy efforts, shaping and driving the organization’s policy agenda in the U.S. government.

“We are delighted to welcome Alex and work with him to create a dedicated focus on working with Capitol Hill to achieving common goals to reduce nuclear and biosecurity risks,” said NTI President and Chief Operating Officer Joan Rohlfing. “Alex’s valuable experience and dedication to NTI’s mission will be a tremendous boost to our work.”

Prior to joining NTI, Tiersky served in senior executive branch appointments, including on the National Security Council staff, where he served as director for Western Europe, and at the U.S. Agency for International Development, as senior advisor for Ukraine Recovery.

From 2016 to 2023, he was a senior policy advisor at the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission), empowering efforts by bipartisan coalitions of senators and House members to counter Russian aggression and bolster alliances. As a specialist in foreign affairs with the U.S. Congressional Research Service (2012-2016), Tiersky provided expert advice to members of Congress and staff on national security and foreign policy legislation, policy, and oversight activities.

Also joining NTI are:

  • Amanda Krieger, Development Officer. With more than five years of experience in nonprofit development, Krieger, who comes from Global Communities, will focus on major gift fundraising.
  • Grace Wankelman, Social Media Officer, Communications Program. Wankelman comes to NTI from Brady: United Against Gun Violence, where she managed 30+ social media channels and was responsible for the organization’s long-term social media and influencer marketing strategy.
