Statement of Former Senator Sam Nunn on the Passing of Former Senator John Warner

With the passing of John Warner, our nation has lost one of its most valued leaders and an outstanding public servant. The national interest was John’s priority. He built bridges across party lines to find solutions to crucial national challenges. John’s word was his bond. His civility was an example to us all, and his integrity was unquestioned.

I was fortunate to have John as a trusted partner on many important defense and foreign policy issues. I am especially grateful for our partnership on the Senate Armed Services Committee, where we worked every day on a bipartisan basis to ensure the security of our nation and support the men and women of the U.S. armed forces and their families.

His important work to strengthen the United States continued until the end of his life. He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, the Commonwealth of Virginia and by our country. Colleen and I send our condolences to his beloved wife, Jeanne, his children, Mary, Virginia and Johnny, and the large circle of friends, colleagues and former staff who were touched by his friendship and inspired by his example.
