Statement of Ernest J. Moniz and Sam Nunn, Co-Chairs of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, on new CTBTO Executive Secretary Rob Floyd

“We congratulate Dr. Rob Floyd on his new position as the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). NTI has had the pleasure of working with Rob for many years in his capacity as a senior Australian official working on nuclear security, nonproliferation, and safeguards matters. With his extensive technical and diplomatic experience, we couldn’t think of anyone better equipped to carry forward this hugely important mission of strengthening the capacity of the CTBTO to verify the ultimate cessation of explosive nuclear testing and promoting Treaty signature and ratification.

“We also want to recognize Dr. Lassina Zerbo for his extraordinary eight-year service as the previous Executive Secretary of the CTBTO. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Rob, the CTBTO, and Lassina to further the goals of nuclear nonproliferation and the verifiable cessation of explosive nuclear testing globally.”

NTI President and CEO Christine Wormuth on the Expiration of the New START Treaty

New START, the last remaining arms control treaty capping U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals, expires on February 5. This marks the beginning of a dangerous new era. For the first time in several decades, there will be no limits on nuclear weapons, less visibility into Russian nuclear weapons activities, and fewer tools to manage a crisis between the world’s two largest nuclear powers.
