The Single Mom Who Mobilized Millions

Randall Forsberg

Randall Forsberg was the key figure behind the Nuclear Freeze Movement of the 1980s. As a young typist at a Stockholm-based peace institute, the Alabama native was horrified to learn about the nuclear arms race. She went on—as a young single mom—to get her doctorate at MIT.

The Freeze grew from local referendums into a million-person march in Central Park—the largest in American history. Forsberg’s charisma helped unite most Americans around an idea that influenced the Reagan administration to pursue arms control with the Soviet Union.
