Pediatrician vs. Nuclear War
Part of Heroes and Hiccups: True Stories about Nuclear Weapon Risks
Benjamin Spock
Pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock was the go-to resource for parents for most of the 20th century, with his book Baby and Child Care selling 50 million copies. He was also the co-chair of the National Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy. Vehemently opposed nuclear testing, he used his authority on child development to argue that protecting children meant opposing nuclear war. Spock was arrested multiple times in acts of civil disobedience at weapons facilities and missile sites, even into his 80s.
