The Civil Rights Icon Who Protested Nukes, Too

Coretta Scott King

Coretta Scott King was a force behind many nuclear weapons protests of the 20th century. She served as a delegate for Women Strike for Peace at a 1962 disarmament conference in Geneva and pushed for a nuclear test ban treaty. MLK Jr. credited her with influencing his stance against nuclear weapons.

As a headliner at the 1982 Central Park nuclear disarmament rally, King said, “We have come here in numbers so large that the message must get through to the White House and Capitol Hill.”
