Richard G. Lugar
Former U.S. Senator
The U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress presented former Senators Sam Nunn and Richard Lugar with its Statesmanship Award for their work in creating the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program.
Other honorees included actor Gary Sinise and the Gary Sinise Foundation, and Margery Kraus, CEO of APCO Worldwide. The awards were presented at the Association’s “Salute to Service” awards dinner on March 19 in Washington, D.C.
In his acceptance remarks, Sen. Nunn paid tribute to "the men and women who actually made Nunn-Lugar work and helped avoid probable catastrophies that can never be proven or quantified," noting that "even well-meaning laws are not self-implementing."
Nunn closed his remarks saying, "We have made huge progress since the Cold War ended, but we have miles to go before we sleep."
