Nunn Lauds NTI Board Member Senator Richard Lugar

Richard G. Lugar

Former U.S. Senator

Statement by Former Senator Sam Nunn

“The people of Indiana, indeed of the nation and the world, have been the fortunate beneficiaries of Dick Lugar’s outstanding leadership in the U.S. Senate for 36 years.  He is a statesman in every sense of the word: smart, skillful, strategic, diplomatic and wise. He has been a tremendous asset to the U.S. Senate, and he will be missed.

“Dick and I forged a partnership more than 20 years ago in the Senate, when we worked together across party lines on groundbreaking legislation to help secure and dismantle weapons of mass destruction left vulnerable after the breakup of the Soviet Union, and we continue to serve together on the Board of the Nuclear Threat Initiative. He is one of the world’s most effective and tireless champions for reducing the threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. There is no doubt that the world is a safer place thanks to Dick Lugar.

“In the Senate and beyond, I could not have found a better partner or friend. My admiration for Dick is boundless, as is my gratitude to him, and I look forward to our continued work together on the critical security issues facing our nation and the world.

“Elections should serve as a reminder that no serious problem facing America today can be solved by one political party. We need thoughtful, effective leaders like Dick Lugar in the Senate. His service stands as a model for collegiality, hard work and never giving up. Though his defeat today is a loss for the U.S. Senate, knowing Dick as I do, he will continue to put his considerable talents, knowledge and phenomenal energy to use for the good – and for the security – of our nation and the world.”
