Ministry
of Atomic Energy.
The Institute of High Energy Physics was founded in
October 1963. As of 31 December 2000 the institute employed 461 researchers,
including 63 doctors of science, 227 candidates of science, one academician, and
three corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
IHEP is a leading center in Russia for the study of elementary
particle physics. Other NIS institutes conduct particle physics research
using IHEP's 70GeV accelerator, which has been in operation since 1967.[1]
A $937 million project to construct a 3TeV UNK
accelerator was underway as of 1999.[2]

10/14/97: ACCELERATOR AND ACCUMULATOR FACILITY UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Russian Minister of Atomic Energy Viktor N. Mikhailov spoke at IHEP's 30th
anniversary celebration on 14 October 1997 about the construction of a
new accelerator and accumulator facility. A 21-kilometer circular
tunnel has already been dug and 75 percent of the necessary equipment is
ready. Mikhailov declared that despite the difficult financial situation
in Russia, his Ministry would support IHEP and he plans to come to the
Institute in 2000 when the new facility begins operating.
